When a body cannot support its soul anymore, that soul starts its journey to the spirit world and that life ceases to exist. The dead hope to be led to the realm of the gods they prayed to. Sometimes, however, they are denied this honor and are forced to wander among the spirits and the other lost souls.
And sometimes a soul is pulled back into its body by force. Those who practice this school of mysticism are called necromancers. They are responsible for the abominable undead and they are even more hated and despised than demonologists. Those who are brought back by a necromancer are shackled to their new master's will.
The undead do not feel cold or warmth, they do not feel mercy, forgiveness or love. The longer they are forced into their remains, the more vengeful and aggressive they become. When they first awaken and still remember their old lives, they tend to be wild and try to disobey the necromancer. But over time, they lose their memories and their will and then they have become mindless slaves.
The undead do not feel hunger or thirst, they do not need sleep or rest. If a necromancer takes care of their undead servants, their bodies can be preserved for many years. But as time goes on, the vessels are used up and so are the souls within. Keeping a soul chained demands effort and focus from the necromancer; if an undead is no longer useful, its mutilated soul is usually released back into the beyond and if a necromancer dies, all of their undead are released.
The undead are not harmed by poison nor disease, which makes them even more useful during plagues when the living suffer from food and labor shortages. Often the decaying bodies of the undead carry illnesses and parasites into the ranks of their living enemies.
The undead do not fear and cannot be charmed or bargained with since they only follow their master’s will. But since the undead are closer to the spirit world and constantly feel the beyond pulling on them, they can act as a gateway for spirits that latch onto the trapped soul. When that happens, the spirit takes control of the undead away from the necromancer - this is called spirit sickness. Such undead creatures become even more dangerous when they are not bound to any purpose and may be found roaming the countryside and surviving even the one who resurrected them.
The undead do not fear the fire, but they do burn and when their bodies turn to ash, their soul is finally released again. The unlife only ends when the body is fully destroyed or the soul is released.
